SPACE SHANTY
Space Shanty was an interactive installation inspired by Bristol’s long-standing ties to the sea and stars, and was hosted by M-SHED Bristol over the summer of 2024.
At the heart of Space Shanty is Bemmie the Ratronaut, Bristol’s first Space Rat. From stowing away on Bristol’s ships to exploring distant planets, Bemmie shares his journey through video screens, audio snippets, and augmented reality, offering a glimpse into his interplanetary escapades and introducing visitors to space-themed shanties. The event rans across six weeks to coincide with the school’s summer break, celebrating the city’s maritime heritage, while uncovering its less-known connection to the cosmo
Hosted by local experiences company Yuup, Space Shanty transformed Bristol’s most iconic harbourside venues into a maze of interactive installations, digital artworks, and historical artefacts.
Space Shanty included a hands-on making area and interactive elements, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in this celestial experience.
Commissioned by Dreamy Place I wrote the Interactive storyline, Invented Bemmie the Rat and led the design of the pace in collaboration with Ed Metcalf . The work was produced in collaboration with Bristol Museums and Aerospace Bristol.
Our company D-UNIT then built the experience with recycled materials sourced from around Bristol and with van loads of cardboard from Children’s Scrapstore!
I commissioned:
Josh Elwell to designe, make and operate Bemmie.
Richard Higgs built the Puppets sets and filmed Bemmie in action.
Greg Chapter . AR
Matt Faulker. Soundscape and auido edits
Pod Farlow - rocket fabrication
Against all odds, Bemmie rises through the ranks to become Captain! Now at the helm, he navigates through uncharted territory, he needs able crew members to help him so listen to his instructions and keep the ship on course!
Take control of this fancy rocket designed by Elon Mousk! Make sure you wear the headset to hear Bemmie giving you a guided tour of the planets and objects in space!
